Hi Guys,

I have a very energetic 2 year old springer and we like to take him for a long walk (run in his case!) over the weekend.

I would like to mix taking him out with my doing some cycling , but am not sure on what approach to take. He is oblivious to bikers so we have to tell him wait , which he does.

This weekend my other half is away so i am looking at taking him to a local park and taking it from there.

Does anyone else cycling on a regular basis with their dog?

Yes its pretty easy once they get used to it just build up slowly and always make sure you stop before the dogs had enough. There are lots of gadgets and gizmos you can buy to do it which are safer options but I've managed to get my pooch doing it just on a harness and a leader he loves it!!

just be careful and wary of other people , i got thrown from bike once when a walked dog was allowed to stray right in front of my path i had no option other than swerve or hit the dog , i swerved took a tumble on to the grass and cracked my helmet wide open (good job i was wearing one) only to be told i shouldnt be riding on the joint cyclepath/ pavement by dogs owner

I have used a WalkyDog in the past (my dog is now too old to go out with me)

Sprung loaded and attached to the seatpost it keeps the dog under control, but away from your wheels and because they're attached to the seatpost they dont have a pull you over effect you might get from holding a lead

thanks guys, that link was interesting. He likes to keep us in view most of the time, but he runs all over the place but this could be due to us walking and not being able to keep up with him.

He may be completely different on a bike, when i can keep pace.

Why not? Great exercise for the dog and a nice way to take him out.
The OP currently takes him to " a local park" , does that sound like a responsible dog owner to you?
Can you think of anything worse than a dog , owned by a non resposnsible owner, following or attached to a bike?

Ok, I'll take the bait.

War, poverty, disease, hunger and starvation, social injustice, violent crime, abuse and neglect of children/the elderly/vulnerable/animals, pollution, destruction of natural habitats, the melting of the ice caps, fascism and the far right, bereavement, human trafficking and slavery, the sex trade, drug and alcohol addiction, lack of access to health care and education, bullying and harassment............... the list, as they say, is endless.

I suspect you have got confused and taken the conversation/thread out of context.

When I was referring to cycling with the dog in the opening post, i did not mean literally, with him attached to the bike.

It was from the point of view, that he would be off lead and i would be riding around on my bike, as opposed to walking around.

Initially I would try this in a safe open area(aka park), and see how he gets on and take it from there.

Is it not a nuisance to have to stop and get off your bike to pick up the pooh?

I aint been out with him as of yet, but did think of that. will try it at the weekend and if its too much hassle, i will just go out walking with the mutt, tire him out, then go out on my tod on the bike

Off the lead in the local park, and you think that's OK?
