Had a few weeks off the bike due to knee issues - still not fully recovered but I want to edge back into training. Obviously, grinding is now out of the question, so spinning is the way forward for me. I am currently trying to push my cadence tolerance .... (I guess I used to be around 75-80 rpm tops). This I have no issue with....I ride at a comfortable place, then shift down a gear so I am spinning a little more than I am comfortable with - I am not having an issue training to higher cadences at all in this sense....but it is more to do with when tackling hills... I have been recently educated to stand up to preserve the knees (not so much of an issue as I liked to climb standing anyhow) .... but trying to maintain the same cadence as I was doing on the flat is haaaard...It isn't that I can't push the gears round fast enough, more to do with the fact lactic acid just piles up in the quads. To tackles this I am just hitting the hills and doing intervals on them...the intervals being when I stand and spin. My question is this.... do many of the Pro's maintain the same cadence while racing up the famous climbs etc, or does it ease off slightly?
(debated putting this into Health and fitness, but I know how to train smart...just wondering if I am being foolish in trying to maintain the same cadences on climbs as I do on the flats)
Another question...when does the racing season tend to draw to an end for races in the UK? I don't want to miss most/all the season due to small injuries just after I have purchased my first licence!
