All,

What is the difference between High 5 2:1 and 4:1 ?
I have seen both and not 100% sure which one I need. I current use 2:1 and cover about 50-70 miles during the weekend and a Time Trial every Wednesday for which I carb up for with drink and pasta. Would 4:1 be slightly better ?

Also I use CNP recovery drink are there better palitable produces out on the market as to me it has a metallically taste ? Use SIS Rego but been told it's mostly sugar and that is why it is very sweet.

Thanks Ivan

Don't know much about shop-bought energy drink, but I would guess that 2:1 and 4:1 are the ratios between components in the drink. Carbohydrate:diluent perhaps?

The 2:1 is intended as an energy drink - and I think contains carbohydate and sugar (fructose) in that ratio.

The 4:1 is the one I use and contains carbohydrate: protein in that ratio. It is intended for prolonged efforts or recovery and the idea is that providing protein will prevent muscle breakdown and / or help repair muscle damage. They provide some findings showing that providing carbs and protein allows people to sustain more effort for longer.

I'm not getting carried away with the claims, but it is palatable, convenient and provides some calories to keep me going on a long ride. I pay around £22 for 1.6 kg and it lasts me about 2 months, so I don't really recognise the claims people make about the cost of these things either.

Nebulous I would be greatful if you could tell me where you got it for £22 as the places I have been looking at at £24.95 upwards. (wiggle \ CRC etc)

Also found some info on the High 5 site and you are right, it contains Carbs and protein in a 4:1 ratio, aparently the protein well build muscles when you are training instead of just building muscle on the rest period.

4:1 looks like the drink I require, they also do a 4:1 extreme with Caffine in but to be honest a good cup of coffee an hour before a racing should give you the same kick (If it is good enough for the TDF riders it is good enough for me).

Thanks Ivan

Hi Ivan

the last two lots I have had have been from here.

high 5

I note they have now gone up to £22.95 Delivery was free by post and arrived very quickly. I previously ordered from someone else and it took 2 weeks but Vigour was only 2-3 days.

To keep the costs down, why not just buy 5kg Maltodextrin and 1kg whey protein which would cost about £26 for 5kg of a 4:1 mix and still have 1kg of maltodextrin spare for a basic energy drink from:-

http://www.myprotein.com

and use the "real" product for special events, where you may think it may give you an advantage

Its all I do if I feel a need for an energy drink on a ride, but since I have discovered I can easily do up to 70 miles on just a good breakfast and meal night before, I hardly bother now.

The ingredients for high five is on the following web page and in reality there is practically nothing in it to justify the high price

And if you need caffeine, just buy a 100grm bag, it lasts ages as I'm finding out, but it helps to have a weighing scale that measures miligrammes to prevent overdosing
