If you're not fussy about the look, a builders waistcoat is probably favourite - £2 to £3 apiece (possibly cheaper) from any workwear supplier.

That's what my husband wears. Its a lot more reflective than my, quite expensive, NightVision jacket, but not so waterproof. He says its just fine while he is waiting for his water-proof hi-viz jacket to arrive from Cycling Active for subscribing for a year.

Its not waterproof, its showerproof and definitely boil in the bag ...i get one every year by cancelling and resubbing.
It will keep the rain off but do not expect it to keep you dry in a proper downpour and if like me he rides hard then your liable to be wetter from sweat than rain.As it costs the same as the mag i regard it as ok.
I had been using it as a top over a SS jersey but its hard to control temperature and when you wash it often enough then the water repellent coating wears off .
ATM i am using a runners gilet from decathlon as it was at least half the price of a cycle specific one, or ...

Imho carry on using the vest and carry the windproof for showers or when it gets really cold, currently using a base layer with a long sleeve jersey with a gilet and i am ok at 6 am , although i know everyone is different.

If you are not too proud...there is a lot to be said for simply wearing one of those £3.99 (or less!) emergency roadside breakdown waistcoats over your jacket of choice. I bought one when the Frenchies insisted we had one in the car when over the channel and it has seen far more use on bicycles than it ever has by the side of the road. They are SERIOUSLY fluorescent too!

Poundland get them in at regular inervals. I bought two a few years ago and I'm still wearing the first one. I only cycle at weekends though.

Ooooh, that's the first ever outing of the words 'ride hard' in regards to my hubby ever!! He is strictly a bimble along sort of rider who hates hills and rides just to humour his wife. When I decide to go for it for 30 seconds or so, then rest for a min and then sprint another 30 seconds and so on and so forth, he stays at the same pace and waits for me to get knackered

Looking around sports direct one day I noticed a hi viz running top reduced to 3.99 rather than the 20 full price cost.
Cost reduced due the elastic in the waistband being missing. Although the size was larger than I wear I bought it and some elastic and rucksack toggles from elsewhere for a quid.
A bit of a faff on getting the elastic through but well worth it in the end and the larger size means my rear end is covered in the wet.
Have bought a few items since from there bargain rails and modified them to suit my needs, although have had to use a friend with a sewing machine on occasions for the cost of a box if chocolates.
Well worth it as saved a small fortune
