Is anyone familiar with the Shimano 10-speed HG94 chain pins? I've read in several places that I need the 3-groove type. What gives?! What about the 2-groove type? I just received a pack of five pins, and they are the 2-groove type. The labeling says "for CN-7801/CN-6600" and "Dura-Ace." Can I use these on my HG94 chain? Are they the same? The seller assured me they are the same, and that these will work with my HG94 chain, but I'm paranoid. The chain is new, and I don't want to do any damage to it or to myself when the chain breaks under pressure and I go down hard on the top tube and...well, you know the rest. As my father used to say: hospitalville.

You can use both according to the Shimano techical doc above.

Hi Zenroad. Yep, many cross-compatible components..... for example an XT chain is the same as a 105. However, I hate Shimano pins. I much prefer KNC powerlinks. They work on Shimano chains, and the KNC ones are reusable.

Thanks, smokeysmoo. I got it. Yes, I know about the one-time-only deal. That's why I bought a pack of five. Also, some important info, straight from Shimano:

Do not split the chain at the previous joining pin. Every time you split the chain, leave the old joining pin alone and split it somewhere else.

AND...I'm with you on the missing link. Learned of them AFTER buying five Shimano joining pins. Will buy a missing link when these pins are gone.

By the way, using the Shimano pin was easy. Well, it was easy with my Park chain tool, that is.
