I swapped out my cassette to a new HG50 8 speed unit. I'm running Sora 3300 8 speed. My chain is still the original UG50, before HG50.

My chain tool shows the chain has hardly any wear on both 0.75 and 1.0 guage (previous owner of bike didn't use it much).

Would it be better to change it to an HG50 7.1mm or HG53 6.6mm?

UG50 is 7.3mm wide. A 6.6mm 9 speed chain will work with an 8 speed drivetrain, but will not be as robust and durable as an 8 speed chain. Personally I wouldn't get Shimano chains with their fiddly connecting pins, when Sram and KMC e.g. offer perfectly good, wide choices with reuseable connecting links for reasonable prices.

As above. Avoid Shimango chains. They used a fiddly connecting PIN which you need to buy separately.

Have used SRAM and they're good, but KMC are seriously impressive.

I use KMC X8 93 (8-speed) and they're a very strong chains and great value - can be bought for £8-£10 if you shop around.
