Mrs BC has just spent £650 on a nice shiny new Specialised. My job was to fit the computer thingy to the handlebars. In doing so I have made a rather nasty scratch on the matt black handlebar.

Anyone know how to remove scratches ???

I'd go over it with black marker pen.

+1. She'll never notice, I guarantee. You'd be amazed what gets overlooked if it's not specifically flagged up.

My sister once showed me about 6" above the light switch in the living room the clear impression of a fist - the result of her punching the wall in fury one night, three or four years ago.... When she originally realised what she'd done, she wet herself waiting for the recriminations...but they never came. No one ever saw it, tho' once pointed out it was as plain as the nose on your face.

Take the blood of one husband, mix with entrails, season with ground liver and chopped up fingernails. Add finely chopped hair and apply to damaged area.

Point out that while fitting said computer you noticed big scratch on handlebars! Shocking. Advise her to take back to bike shop, where complicit bike shop owner will apologise and let her choose some flashy new bar tape to make up for it, that you've already paid him for. Cover it scratch with marker pen, congratulate Mrs BC on being so assertive. Everyones a winner.
