What gearing do you have on your bike? Did you have problem with the same hills before the break?
Have you been working with a physio to ensure the muscles around the chest and shoulder are strong? I assume you've been cleared to ride
Have you done any riding since the fracture? E.g. On a turbo? If not, you probably just need to get fit again. Just keep riding a mix of terrain. How big are these hills, I don't know how lumpy it is around Chelmsford as Essex isn't known for its mountainous terrain

There aren't really any secrets other than have the right gearing and just getting out there and trying

Not sure about the gears but my ride is a 2015 canondale supersix EVO 105 if that helps. And yes I was just getting used to hills as was only riding for six months before fracture happened. Most hills in Essex are undulating but north hill to Danbury is a two mile climb.

Looks like that might be a 52/36 chainring with highest gear of 28 on the cassette so if you don't mind the expense you could maybe swap out the chainset for a 34/50 which would give you a little better gearing. Think it might be a short cage rear derailleur so 28 is probably the biggest you could get at the back, although many folks seem to get up to 30 with a little tweak.

Your fitness will come back quite quickly, speaking from experience of the same injury.

Have broken both my collar bones, two separate occasions. Just takes time, but recovery is surprisingly quick, once you've got clearance from the doctors and physios.

Good luck

Anyone got advice about helping a balding grumpy oldish man to get up the hills after suffering a fractured clavicle three months ago ?

Unless your baldness and demeanour are critical factors in your riding, do you have any other useful info on your riding history or fitness?

1) You could get a balding grumpy old woman to give you a push
2) I recently changed my rear cassette from 11-28 to 11-32........massive improvement. Cost me £100.00 but made
my cycling so much more enjoyable on the hills.
