Got a puncture on my rear wheel.... so I removed the wheel and changed the tube and after I reattached the rear wheel my gears arent working as smoothly as they were before.

Moving from a smaller cog to a larger cog on the rear cassette is fine however when I try to move to a higher gear it doesnt change correctly and can take a second or two to change.

Is this something that I can fix easily myself, bearing in mind I've only started cycling a couple of weeks, or would it be best to take to my local bike shop?

Thanks in advance

It's possible that you haven't seated the wheel back quite right so before re indexing the gears, may be worth opening up the quick release on the rear wheel, making sure it's seated down right and tightening it up again.

Here's the standard video on the subject of indexing gears.

You could also try my favoured method of random twiddling. That works quite well too. After a fashion.

As above, check that the wheel is correctly fitted in the frame. If they worked OK before, there is no reason why they shouldn't afterwards.

When refitting a wheel after removal, try standing the bicycle upright and then free the QR, jiggle the wheel by its rim, put the brake full on and tighten the QR with the brake on. This should centre the wheel properly in the drop-outs.

When you fit the rear wheel fit it on the smaller front cog, Alter your gears so the chain is in the middle of the cassette and spin the wheel gently before you tighten the quick release up.
That might help..
