Hi I've been trying to find the correct position for a derailer now for about an hour and starting to get frustrated with it as it just doesn't seem to fit anywhere. It was easy enough to get off and begining to think I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas? The bold on the back seems to be stopping it attaching

That's how it should be, but will reduce the length of the slot for the wheel and will reduce the clearance for the tyre against the frame. But there should be enough room.

However, you can get away without the retaining bolt. The bike I am riding on the left was actually a track frame. The frame had rear facing slots and the hanger was forward facing, so no way could I use the retaining bolts. I just used the QR levers to keep everything in place. With your nutted axle it should be even easier.

Good luck

So what your saying is I could take the small bolt out and just hope it doesn't fall off?

Yep - worked for me. It won't fall off, it's just like having an extra washer between the frame and wheel nut. Obviously a bit messy when you have to take the wheel off, but it does work.
