Hi Chosensprocket, and welcome!:welcome:

The usual questions regarding your new steed will be:
What is your budget? (We promise to only try and double it, no more.....)
Where do you live and where do you want to cycle?
Have you any preferences? Or more importantly do you have any idea of what you don't want?

Just looking in, I hear you very well, chosensprocket, I rode a bike *everywhere* up 'till I was 18, then laid off until I was mid-late-20s, then got back into it again. Let us know *anything* about yourself and your situation, and how you propose to use the bike--it'll all help us give you the best possible advice.

All valid points from Cubist there. Your answer will determine what sort of bike would be most suitable, road bike, mountain bike, hybrid, unicycle
It will be worth thinking of these things as you will get plenty of advice that's for sure. Whether it help you decide or not is another matter
:welcome:to CC though

slight cross post with canrider there^

Will you use the bicycle as a mode of transport, an alternative to car, bus or train? Or do you intend an all-out fitness thing where you will use the bicycle purely as an exercise machine?

get a nice single speed.
no fuss no hassle...
lots of puffing and panting to start off with but you will soon be motoring.

+1

Or at least try to avoid the temptation to get lots of gears until you're experienced enough to know how to use them, and whether or not you genuinely need them. Gears are hugely over-rated.

Ignore the flat-earthers Chosensprocket..... 3x10 is the way forward, unless you are on a Trail bike, in which case 1x10 may be enough!

3x10 is massive overkill unless you're a serious racer who needs the close spacing to maintain a precise cadence.

Seriously, most beginners don't know how to use multiple gears and would be better off with a simpler set-up, ie a single chainring. I'd go so far as to say a three-speed hub would be plenty enough for most everyday cyclists' needs - one gear for going uphill, one for going fast, and one for everything else in between.

Perhaps, but it all depends on exactly what he wants to get out of the bike. If he wants it to get him up to his first TT or cycling with the local club, a geared bike would likely be more appropriate. Anyways, lets not start arguing the case now, let's hear what chosensprocket has to say first!

I've asked the OP where they live. I didn't recommend any gear systems at all until I know the answer.

You have recommended a singlespeed. I was mocking your potentially disastrous advice. If the Op lives next door to me, singlespeed will be pretty shoot for a beginner. I use 3x10 because I want to be able to get home without pushing.

Seriously, you don't need 30 gears to cycle over that terrain. Five gears would be more than enough as long as they were the right gears.

Sure, singlespeed may not be enough gears for the OP, but I'm convinced that 30 gears will definitely be too many.
