I currently just have some Shimano M520 pedals but have ordered some road shoes in hopes of avoiding having to get custom orthotics to fix my foot pain (yes, I've done a professional fitting and changed the cleat position but I swear I can feel the pedals through the d*mn shoes as the pain moves with the cleat position...).

I know people say that with pedals "It's a matter of what you like" but I can't really try them all and return the ones I don't like as much!

Speedplay- I like that they're two-sided, offer good cornering clearance, and people say that their cleats are a *little* easier to walk on (plus they make "Coffee Shop Caps" for them).

Then at one of the bike shops I go to, the guy says that he never puts someone in Speedplays unless that's all they want due to them having so many screws in each cleat (that are always coming loose)? Plus I've heard that they don't last as long as other pedals? And of course, they (the Zeros) tend to be more expensive than other pedals...

Look (Sprint pedal)- seems nice becasue they're cheapr! LOL

They're only one sided though (I think) so I don't know...And do they make cleat covers (like Speedplays "Coffee Shop Caps") for Look cleats?

Help me?

The bike shop guy clearly hasn't read the Speedplay instructions!

I've been using Speedplay Zeros for the past 2 years on my road bike and never had any problems with screws coming out. The ones that attach the faceplate to the cleat body are supplied coated with thread lock, and it's worth re-applying if you remove and re-attach the cleat.

I do have to say that the cleats are not the easiest to walk in, and they do wear out and are relatively expensive to replace. On the plus side they are hugely adjustable, lots of float if you need it, and being double sided are great in traffic and for commuting. The pedals have a grease port for easy servicing, and the cleats just need a quick clean and grease once in a while.

I'd get some looks. Well I have in fact, amongst other systems.

Cheap - just got some for £10 from London Single Speed yesterday actually. Cleats are cheap (eBlag) and huge platform which, if you have any half-decent shoe, will not pressure-spot your feet.

They are simple, roubust, fit-and-forget, float or not as to your liking, adjustable for tension, and you can get walking covers for them for £5.

They are single sided of course, but I found that after 10 mins you get the muscle-memory sorted to flip your toe in, and it's job done.

And if that doesn't cure it, you haven't wasted a ton of cash.

i say forget the looks and go with the Shimano SPD-SL's. I feel their design of the pedal and cleat is better, but they may not fit your budget. + you can't get cleat covers for shimano's (as far as i'm aware) but you can for looks

i was in one shop and they showed me some pedals that you can use with road shoes and mtb shoes. they looked like road pedals rather than mtb pedals. i ended up buying the mtb pedals just coz i'm used to them, but they were nice. i'm not sure what make they are though. but they might do without you having to buy new shoes.
