help with gears

When in certain gears or selecting certain ones there is an annoying rattling/catching noise coming from the chain is this a fault or is it me not using gears correctly, my bike was second hand when purchased and I am yet to have it serviced, would this be wise and what should I expect from a service and how much to pay? Thanks in advance for replies.

Or take it to the LBS for a little service, you should be pleasantly surprised when you get it back and it will be like a new bike

I've been told that before I am swinging that way cause I'm pretty sure it needs new break pads

lol, mine was like that today, after I gave it some t.l.c. yesterday.
