My 13 year old son is looking to join up with some of his friends who ride with the local cycling club.

He's fit and healthy but currently only has a mountain bike.

He says he's committed to doing it regularly but I would rather get him a 'cheapish' s/h road bike to try out for a few months before splashing the cash.

Is this sensible? I think so

However, have tried numerous LBSs and websites and none seem to have any suitable bikes at all.

Any ideas?

If he's joining a local club that has children his age, ask at the club if there are any second-hand bikes for sale, e.g. though the website, club forum, magazine, secretary, parents of his friends.

A very helpful club might have some older members who have second, third or fourth bikes kicking around in a garage which he could borrow to see if he's interested...

I'd try asking some of these questions at the club, just in case the above happens.

Got one. Through the club in the end. great little bike (bit old but fantastically well maintained. Already taken it out. We went for a quick 20 miler and he couldn't believe how much faster (and easier) it was than his mountain bike  a budding Cavendish in the making.

Only down side is he wants an all carbon frame like his friends for Christmas !!!

Went out for a spin at the weekend with a friend, after servicing the Carlton I've lent to him. He was impressed by the difference a bit of lubrication, gear-adjusting and tyre-inflation makes. Then I offered him a go on my Vitus. "Jesus!" he said, after the first 25 yards. ;)
