The little knob a the top of the right hand fork leg is a blowout gate.
It is a safety device designed to protect everything if you go over a big bump or pothole with the forks locked out. It means that in the case of a big hit, the fork will compress, thus saving your fillings, the fork seals and so on.
You set it according to your weight. I have mine set so that the forks won't bob when I pedal, but it still gives a compliant ride if I forget to unlock over rough stuff.
Here's what the manual says:
"Some forks with motion control damping allow for fine tuning of the Lock setting. You can choose the point at which the "lock" setting can "blow-off" and respond to inputs such as bumps or rocks. The adjustment is made y the floodgate and is either adjusted internally....or externally with the gold "Gate" adjuster knob.
Heavier riders may find better performance with maximum floodgate settings, while lighter riders blah blah...with minimum. Withteh floodgate tuned properly the MotionControl will resist rider induced "bob" but provide compliance to medium sized bumps in rough or aggressive terrain. You should experiment with the Floodgate seting while on the trail to optimize the fork for your riding style. "
Turn the gate knob towards the plus makes it harder to blow off the fork, back it off to reduce the input required.
