I have an old GIANT hybrid/touring bike. From my other posts you'll see a) I'm just getting into cycling, b) for fitness, commuting, trails with the family, c) I'm planning to change the Giant later this year.

On a recent commute I got a puncture. Hadn't a spare with me - oops. I promptly replaced the tyres (originals and 10+ years old I think) with Schwalbe Marathons to give some puncture resistance. I also got some "self-sealing" inners, white latex stuff, hmmm - not convinced but anyway.

The wheels are 700c, the old tyres were 700c x 35. The marathons are 700c x 32 to 38.

I've done 2 or 3 rides on this set up and the Schwalbe's felt great - more grip but less rolling resistance if that doesn't sound weird. This morning I set off and was shocked to find that the front was bulging out quite badly near the valve. I stopped, took the air out, moved it all back into place, checked no pinches or anything. Pumped it up (hand pump only definitely not over-inflated - I could squish the tyre with a hand). 100 yards later bulging out again. The back hasn't actually bulged yet but I'm watching it like a hawk.

On the face of it everything is the right size. What could I have done wrong ? Has the design of rims changed in the past 10 years ?

I bought the tyres and inners from Halfords (I know, but they had them in stock and I was in a hurry). I'm going to take the front wheel, tyres (new and old) and inners over to Halfords and see if they can tell me anything, but I have more hope that you guys will point me in the right direction.

Barnet,
I would say that the tyres should fit, there has not been changes to ordinary clincher rims. It could be that there is a fault with the tyre wall, was it bulging in the same place the second time? Take it back and get a replacement.

yes, but the tyre wall was coming out of the rim for around 8 inches or so around there. Have replaced it with the old one and now it's off it looks clearly out of shape.

I re-checked and the old one is 700 x 40C.

How do you work out or know whether a 35C tyre can go on the wheels I have ? The back one looks fine.
Is it a bulge by the valve?

I'd guess that you haven't seated the tyre properly when you put it back together.

Make sure that the tyre is seated into the wheel properly before you tighten the securing nut on the valve stem. If you do things in the wrong order, the tube will not allow the tyre into the wheel and it'll push the tyre off when you start riding. As you found.

Norm, Lee, all - thanks. Will have a go at that tomorrow. Appreciate the time.

Tyres can often look mishapen when off the rim, its nothing to worry about, can be due to having been hung up and stored.

I only ever tighten the retaining nut after I've pumped the tyre up and never fit innertubes when they are completely deflated.

OK I took off the tyre, carefully put it back on again. No retaining nut, no tools, no pinching. Gradually increased pressure. All looking better until it hit a certain pressure - using a hand pump and tyre squishable with 1 thumb, sure it can't be overinflated (must get a proper pump with a guage). It's definitely soft though.

Then the bulge came. Not next to the valve this time. I'm convinced it's a fault and it's on it's way back to Halfords.

Took the tyre back and Halfords agreed it was duff and changed it. New Tyre is on, no issues. Bought. Proper pump with guage - it's pumped to 4.5 bar and fits perfectly.

Sorted.
