Well, if you can do them distances you should be fine shouldn't you?

The Olympic distance is less than what you can do at a good speed minus the swim.

1.5k swim
40k cycle
10k run

Or am I missing something?

I would suggest at good and dedicated Tri forum would be able to give you better advice re training specifically for a Tri. Your local swimming pool should be able to offer 1-1 lessons to improve your swimming if you need them.

Join a club for the swimming bit, and you will pick up tons of useful tips

Practise the transitions (T1 and T2)

Get appropriate tri kit (elastic laces for running, tri shorts or suit)

Basic principles to go from cyclist to triathlete:

  • wear knee high socks or below the ankle socks at all times
  • crash on every corner
  • replace your name with "a triathlete" in every conversation i.e. "Hi babycakes I am John" becomes "Hi babycakes I am a triathlete".
  • go out on tri bars and aero helmet for a 6 mile ride to grab a strava segment

excellent. One of the benefits is being able to laugh at colleagues when they boast about doing the London marathon (and this is genuine) and discovering that your exceptionally crap run time in an Ironman was better then their standalone time. (My time was 5:21 so he must have been really rubbish)

^^This^^. I joined the masters version of my children's swimming club and then a tri club. It was a great and I went from being able to do two lengths front crawl to four km open water in under six months and that wasn't anything unusual. Duathlons are a great place to start and they tend to be at the beginning and end of the season once the temperature has dropped bit.
