Lifting my bike out the tight fitting car boot this morning, heard a metallic ping sound - thought, oh no! broken spoke. Checked them all, but no damage, then rea\lised that I have absolutely no front brake at all. The (mechanical) brake is a Tektro IOX, the lever seems to move the actuator arm instantly, and through its entire range, and the outer pad seems to move ok. Any ideas warmly welcomed. I have never fitted, opened up, or serviced a disk brake, and dont really know where to start. Would hate to make things worse !!!

Check that the cable outer is still in place at the brake lever; sometimes the cable can get pulled out of the slotted knurled adjuster, which lets the whole system go slack.

Thanks for quick reply. No, thats okay. As soon as the brake lever moves, it pulls the cable and moves the arm. the arm moves its full range, but still absolutely no stoppage at all - I mean nothing, as if there is no brake there at all.

The ping you heard could have been the pad retainer clip popping out. If it was, you'll be needing a new one of those!

That sounds a real possibility - thanks! will see if its somewhere in the car still, then will suss out how to get into pads! Or, is it likely that the retainer clip will have sheared off?

If the cabling's ok and the arms are moving in response to lever actuation then it can only be that the pads aren't moving with the lever arms. Either dislodged or the spring/clip is broken(not sure with the Tektros).

Hopefully it's something that can be slotted backin or a quick spring/pad replacement fixes, worst case it needs a new caliper.

If the pad moves when you move the lever...the brake should work...shouldn't it?<br><br><br><br><br>EDIT: Cross Post.&nbsp;&nbsp; MacB's post is far more illuminating and helpful&nbsp; <img class="bbc_emoticon" alt="" src="http://www.cyclechat.net/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/biggrin.gif"><br>

Yes they should, but they dont! Played with them over lunch and got them working again - sort of. They stop me, but not nearly as powerful as before.

This is terminal proceed to the nearest bike shop and treat yourself to a brand new bike. While you are there leave the old one, it may be repairable and then you'll have two! :bravo::bravo::cheers:
