Help on gearchange on new SCR2

I have this weekend taken delivery of a Cyclescheme purchased Giant SCR2. Chuffed as Larry with it after the last 3 years of riding second hand Gryphon Carrera, although it was ideal at the time (lost 4 stone and got up to 120 miles a week commuting).
The only problem I have is when trying to change gear on the chainring-left side lever-it goes to the main gear OK but the LBS said I could micro adjust it with a little nudge but it either changes up or down a complete gear/ clatters like it's got a twig in it or doesn't seem to make any difference at all. The indicator above the lever does not seem to make any sense either.
Took it back to the LBS twice who said they had tweaked it a bit and to carry on practising.
Is there a scientific way of doing this or is it as the shop says?
Any advice gratefully received.
PS this is a first post so please excuse any muppetry.:biggrin:

Guess I'll just carry on practising then. Ta.

I seem to remember that the SCR2 had a triple chainset and Tiagra shifters.

Unless things have changed (quite possible) there is no trim or micro adjust function with these gears. One 'click' should change you one gear.

it either changes up or down a complete gear/ clatters like it's got a twig in it or doesn't seem to make any difference at all.

Changing up /down a complete gear would make sense. This is what it's suppost to do. Clattering however generally means that the gears arn't adjusted quite correctly. The mech has moved far enough to rub against the chain but not far enough to change gear.

Sorry merlin, didn't see this one initially - I have the same bike.

The trim (micro adjust) for the left hand lever is only on the end of the gear range, as I remember. Moving out from the smallest ring (main lever) mine goes;

1 click - small ring to middle ring
1 click - middle ring "high" trim (for running on the middle ring and smaller back sprockets)
1 more move (doesn't click on this one) up to the big ring.

Coming down again (inner lever);

1 click - trim for big ring (i.e. for running big ring and larger sprockets)
1 click - big ring to middle ring
1 click - middle ring to smallest ring

When I got my SCR I grabbed the technical docs from shimano's site for the front and rear derailleurs - they're a great help in setting the gears up. If your bike is anything like mine, I think you'll find you have a bit of messing to do!

John, thanks for the advice about the Shimano site, never occurred to me. One week further on and several more visits to LBS later and gears/gear changing seem to be settling down.
I LOVE RIDING THIS BIKE!!
My 10 mile commute each way too and from work every day always ends up being further than I need to go. Just because I can.
Thanks again.

Happy to help Merlin. I found I had to tinker with the indexing quite a bit over time, the strong spring on the Tiagra front derailleur seems to cause a fair bit of cable stretch.
