so i have my kids simple balance bike, i have watched many videos on schrader (car tyre spring format) and presta (thin) and get the difference. but i still can't understand how to pump up this tyre?

this pump does both (it says), i'm like 90% this is presta but it doesn't look exactly like the prestas on you tube as they have a release button on the end. anyways when i put the pump in presta mode the little detachable screw end from the value screws into the pump only when its not in the valve. once in the valve it no longer fits. i'm doing something wrong, please someone put me out of my misery,. i'm sure i'm being extremely dumb

many thanks

That's a Woods valve. Leave it all assembled and just screw/clamp the pump on the top.

You may need one of these to get your pump to work, depends on the pump head

many thanks for the reply, indeed it is a woods valve and needed the little extender/attachment in order for the pump to make a secure connection to the valve when all connected. Since making this post and waiting for it to be approved i went over to Velo Haus a bike shop in Northampton, they were extremely friendly and helpful and recommend to anyone, even tho i had a kids bike and it is a specialist bike shop

My presta pumps attach to Woods valves without trouble, but I've heard of some that don't. I find Woods valves much more reliable than Schrader and easier to inflate/deflate than Presta.

Glad you got it fixed, anyway!

I've never heard of Woods. What have you found unreliable about the Schrader valves? I briefly had Presta on the Brompton when I was sent the wrong tubes & absolutely hated them.

They lose air quicker, even when they're the same brand tubes as I use with Woods (usually Impac or Schwalbe). The tyres on my most-used bike are currently 50psi front, 75 rear, in case that matters.

It's also a bit dodgy putting Presta in a rim drilled for Schrader without an adapter because the valve can get "blown" out the hole enough to tear the tube, but if Brompton tyres run at low pressures like most other folding bikes, it's probably not too risky.

Interesting about the Woods - I never find much air loss in mine. I guess there are other factors involved too.

The Brompton Presta was very short lived - only until I could get to the shop and get the correct replacements. I don't run mine at low pressures - about 100psi works for me
