There are two types of valve

If you have presta - unscrew the bit at the very top and press down. If you have the schrader - you will see a little rod inside - press down on it with a pointy stick or something.

If it is a presta valve undo it and press the valve to let the air out, if it is a Shraeder(spelling?), car type valve, you need to depress the bit in the centre, my car tyre gauge has a little plastic thing for doing that.

When you say you've loosened the brakes, have you 'unhooked' them?

If you squeeze the arms together (using one hand) and unhook the noodle from the noodle holder they will flop apart and should give enough clearance so you can get your wheel out.

A couple of points for when you reinstall it:

It's very easy to cross-thread the bolt that hols the gear change thingy (aka the rear derailleur or rear mech) on. Line it up carefully and don't force it - it should be very easy to turn the bolt. A smear of copper grease on the bolt threads before installation will make it easier to take it off next time.

Remember to attach the noodle, adjust the brake pads and check the brake's working before riding off!^_^

Good on you for doing it and learning

Edit: your 34T sprocket has "megadrive" written on it, I wonder if Sega lost that Trademark
