The above sums it up, you can buy lights for riding on normal well lit routes or get lights that allow you to ride on unlit country lanes in complete darkness at full speed. The same goes for rear lights ranging from little flashers to retina burning lights .
Depedant on your budget and riding conditions you can either go for well known brands that tend to be more expensive or if your prepared to wait after purchase then you can get very bright lights on import from china that offer a lot of power for relativly little money .
I personally use a magicshine mj808 for riding at night on back roads

For normal roads i use 2 of these...

On the back i use a smart r2,very similar to the rsp astrum..,paired with a standard flasher on each pannier bag.

For what it is worth ...

(2) For me, my preferred option now is dynamo powered. I currently use a
Busch & Muller Lumotec IQ Cyo Senso Plus
on my Surly Long Haul Trucker and will also move my commuter over to dynamo power in the medium term.

yes - toolfree mounting

Another one to consider: http://www.highonbikes.com/smart-lunar-35-lux-led-front-bike-light-3-modes.html

For the back - any of the Smart 1/2 watts are fine. Personally I use two of them, one on constant , other on flashing mode (unless riding in company).
Cost for two, if you shop around, is little more than the rather lovely R2 or the eyeball searing R1 - and you have the re-assurance that if one should fail you are still properly visible.

I noticed magicshine.co.uk have started selling mytinysun lights which includes a front light with 3600 lumens for £500.

While I appreciate the value for money and power of Magicshines and others of the same ilk, none of them are designed for road use, the beam is round in shape and will blind other oncoming road users particularly on narrow dark country lanes. No doubt you will be told you just need to angle the light down, why should you have to every time a someone approaches you? If money is available, after much research have a look at the Exposure Strada Mk3, a seriously well made light manufactured in this country with good after sales service. I have now seen one in action and they are seriously impressive, working like a car headlight with dip and main beam, even a remote handlebar switch so you don't have to move your hands. Sure you pay a lot of money but you also get peace of mind and a great looking light, I will be buying one of these this summer.
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/exposure-strada-mk3-front-light/ This is a good time to buy lights and you may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere. Good luck.
