well without the basic details of what bike and what transmission system you have its difficult to hazard a guess . If its a new bike it definitely needs to go back as you say.
Its likely to be the new cables have stretched a bit and the outer cables and ferrules etc have compressed a little bit resulting in your gear indexing being out of alignment.
This is perfectly normal and happens every time you fit new gear cables to a bike. They need adjusting after a few miles use then hopefully not again for months.
An experienced bike technician knows this and so pre-tensions the cables by pulling them away from the frame and holding some tension on them which stretches the inner cables and compresses the outers . Then resetting the gear indexing should eliminate the need to reindex the gears a few weeks after initial use.
