On my way into work today and my gears keep slipping. The bike is only 6 weeks old so I will take it back. Just wondering what the common causes were and if there are any checks I should be carrying out.

Cheers

well without the basic details of what bike and what transmission system you have its difficult to hazard a guess . If its a new bike it definitely needs to go back as you say.
Its likely to be the new cables have stretched a bit and the outer cables and ferrules etc have compressed a little bit resulting in your gear indexing being out of alignment.

This is perfectly normal and happens every time you fit new gear cables to a bike. They need adjusting after a few miles use then hopefully not again for months.

An experienced bike technician knows this and so pre-tensions the cables by pulling them away from the frame and holding some tension on them which stretches the inner cables and compresses the outers . Then resetting the gear indexing should eliminate the need to reindex the gears a few weeks after initial use.

Take your bike back to the store you bought it from. A good bike shop will give you the first service free, usually a month after purchase.

Whatever you do, make sure that rear mech adjuster thread is plastered with grease.

Then in another six months when the gears start clicking, you won't be faced with a corroded up adjuster on the roadside in the middle of nowhere.
