You could follow the instructions here to make a pen drive into a bootable Linux distro with an anti virus scanner on it. (Even though this sounds uber geeky, the instructions are step by step and very good.)
Alternatively, you could download this iso (cd image), burn it to a CD and boot your machine from that.
I don't use AVG anymore. It went downhill with 7.5. It was good for years but sadly thesedays I don't think it's upto much. On using avast it was picking up stuff AVG stared straight past. Trendmicro used to be good but the software was appalling and didn't like many machines and connections at all.
I say Avast is better than AVG imho. Years of using AVG. It wasn't just the finding of viruses I got smegged off with AVG corrupting every few months on multiple machines and going weird which happened with uber late versions of 7.2 and 7.5.
I use Zone Alarm - they gave the first year free so may still do that deal.
Once installed it has a scan facility to get rid of the little buggers. I have been illness free since installing and I am happy to now pay them for renwal.
