You could try running Trend Micro HouseCall, which is an online virus scanner:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

or perhaps install AVG free:

Tim has the right idea. There are plenty of free virus scanners - I prefer ClamAV myself.

Alternatively, call a sympathetic geek friend and ask them to fix your machine in exchange for delicious cake.

You could follow the instructions here to make a pen drive into a bootable Linux distro with an anti virus scanner on it. (Even though this sounds uber geeky, the instructions are step by step and very good.)

Alternatively, you could download this iso (cd image), burn it to a CD and boot your machine from that.

+1 for AVG free
Pretty effective in my opinion and doesn't seem to hog resources like Norton etc.

Been using it for a few years now and haven't had too much problem with virus'

AVG. It's the bidniss. And it's free. Try it first, if it doesn't sort it, you've lost nothing.

By the way, how do you know you've got a virus? What are the symptoms?

I don't use AVG anymore. It went downhill with 7.5. It was good for years but sadly thesedays I don't think it's upto much. On using avast it was picking up stuff AVG stared straight past. Trendmicro used to be good but the software was appalling and didn't like many machines and connections at all.

I say Avast is better than AVG imho. Years of using AVG. It wasn't just the finding of viruses I got smegged off with AVG corrupting every few months on multiple machines and going weird which happened with uber late versions of 7.2 and 7.5.

I use Zone Alarm - they gave the first year free so may still do that deal.
Once installed it has a scan facility to get rid of the little buggers. I have been illness free since installing and I am happy to now pay them for renwal.
