I know a few months ago there was a long thread about using the GPS capability of a mobile phone to plot a route you had cycled, and there were long discussions about which software was best to plot the route etc etc.

Can anyone remember what i am talk about and point me in the right direction of the thread. I have tried a search but could not find it.

Thanks in advance

Was it this one?

There was also a thread by Magnatom, so check his started threads. I think he used his in conjunction with Google or similiar to produce a profile of his route.

I've bought a 3rd party Garmin navigation system, mainly for car use but I'm just exploring it's gpx import facility but it seems to be quite limited, probably most useful for just whipping ot the pocket to see where you are rather than actual bike navigation.

Edit: there was this and this

Thanks Crackle, at a glance i think one of them is what I was looking for, I will have more of a read tonight.

Just bought a new mobile that has GPS on it so wanting to use it to play a bit on some of the routes I take, not for route planning but to see the route on a map and try and see if I can get a profile etc from it.

If you have a GPS phone running Windows Mobile, then Run-GPS software is excellent
(www.rungps.net) It will

1.function as a cycle-computer tracking speed, distance, av speed etc
2.allow you to easily upload the routes you have ridden to their server www.gps-sport.net and keep track of your overall distance ridden, routes and helps with motivation.
3. allow you to plan routes on your PC and download them to your mobile
4. allow you to export routes (the online app) in .kml or .gpx format to other programs such as google maps.

Download the trial version and give it a shot. A much better investment of £20 than the shirts I bought from Lidl.

If you have a blackberry, there's a bunch of apps that do this on the BB app store. tmj-mobile works as well...

SE with GPS (EG C905) comes with Tracker in the applications.

Good if you do the same route it maps distance v speed etc and does a nice little graph giving you speed along all the route.

I have used the Sports Tracker three times now, once on the bike doing my normal route to work and twice for walks and it seems to do what I want.

When I looked at my cycle route on the online map in satelite view I realised it had missed a chunk of the route off, but that is through trees and I had my phone in my pocket so I guess it lost GPS signal there.
