I'm afraid I am a bit of a numpty when it comes to looking at map data and the like. (But I am learning a lot!!)

Having been recomended bikehike.co.uk by a fellow cc member- I have been mapping all my routes- which is fantastic.

I have also had a look at mapmyride- very similar- but the elevation data is presented differently.

I am planning a trip from Daventry to Fleckney (Leicestershire) to visit a friend- but need to know if I can manage the route.

Bikehike makes it look hellish-(very scary looking blue spikes!) but mapmyride doesn't look so bad!!!

Hills on mapmyride are 1-2%- which I know I can handle-but all the data differs between both sites- will this make much difference to what I will actually experience during my ride?

 sorry to be so thick

Do not fret Kirst, share the link here and I/we shall look at your route. From my brief knowledge of coventry area to leicester there are no mammoth hills that are present elsewhere in the country.

Not sure about the difference between the two as I don't use map my ride. However - on bikehike if you click and drag the mouse across the position of the spike (or any portion for that matter) of the gradient graph - it will zoom the graph into that part and also zoom the map and highlight that part of the route - that then gives you more of an idea how long the hill is, if really short you could walk it maybe?

Morning kirst.

I compared the gradient of some of them hills using bikehike, none of your climbs look too severe or very long so get out there and enjoy the ride!

Hardest one looks like climbing out of the village of welton. Post back on how you found it!

Ah well- done it!!!
What a lovely ride - 21 miles in all. Garz- the hill out of Welton was ok- steep- but quite short - although for some reason my thighs felt like lead today

Saw a lot of fellow cyclists and they all said hello back to me apart from one- but I think he was "in the zone"!!!!

Now for a sausage sandwich and some banana cake.....

I generally just look at the total climbing compared to distance. At less than 1000 ft of climbing over 25 miles that route is not going to be too difficult.

As a comparison this route I do www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=19661 has a similar length to climb ratio and it is a fairly easy ride. There are a couple of steep bits requiring bottom gear/granny ring but they are very short mostly I use middle to top gears on that ride.

Well done on the 21 mile loop. I would say you have proved to yourself that you can do it now.Generally people suggest you increase your distance by 10 percent increments but if you go gently I think most people can do more than they think.

Good Luck .

Thanks Garz- Erm.....probably not the toughest hill because it was quick- so just went for it !! There was a longer climb between West Haddon and Long Buckby.

Thank you- granny gear  !! I haven't actually used that gear yet (well- only by accident whilst still getting my head round my gear levers!!! Not good when joining a very busy A road- it threw my legs off my bike) I tend to do most flats in top gear and hills in middle gear (and drop down to 2 sometimes 1 on the right hand lever- OK- I know there is a proper technical term for that- but I'm still learning :blush::biggrin:)

I do want to start increasing my distances- and I could go quite far- but it's my lady soft bits and my left ischial tuberosity that stop me going any further......am looking into a new saddle having perused some threads on here.

I find that the further I am from a city the more chance of my friendly wave being returned.I guess in town your arm would drop off trying to acknowledge every cyclist that passes.
