Yes, all very familiar. I also try to keep the lid on it but I do remember the start of my cycling obsession 20 years ago; at family gatherings my brother and I talked about nothing else and the rest of the family got pretty hacked off about it.

Nowadays I also get up early on Saturdays but that's so that I can end the ride at the local pool later and take my son swimming. I don't have affairs or spend lots on clothes, boozing, CDs or going to soccer matches so generally my cycling gets a cautious thumbs up at home.

a nice take on the male condition, but I reckon could be applied to any hobby/past time from cycling to golf and photography to astronomy... blokes like kit and gadgets.

"the unsightly appearance of him dressed as a gimp each weekend morning".

She obviously has a point there, but it would have been better made if she didn't appear in the picture dressed in something made from a pair of old curtains.

"Instead, I have gamely tried to join him. In an attempt to bridge the great divide, I gingerly agreed to cycle to work with him during the recent Tube strike. He waited patiently while I puffed and wheezed across Hyde Park, and we cycled together to Oxford Circus. I sensed it was a triumph for him; another converted soul. I even agreed on a trip to Richmond. Just don’t mention a tandem"

Well I think Mr Plax must be a cycling widower then. He doesn't mind so much as he's usually asleep in the chair anyway. He's twigged now though that if he wants to go to the football at the weekend he can just say something like "why don't you go cycling this weekend" and I'll jump at the chance, which allows him the opportunity to go to the football guilt free.

I was going to ask if there was such a thing as a cycling widower!

I think everyone's missing the positive message. In the end the writer ends up cycling herself. Isn't that a good thing? The whole 'cycling widow' thing is very light-hearted and certainly doesn't send a negative message about cycling
