I've recently found an old picture of me, circa 35 years ago, on what l think was one of the first Tacx turbo trainers?
The "resistance" was by two reversed multi bladed fans spun by the rear wheel.
The mark II version replaced one of the multi bladed fans with a small, but quite heavy flywheel.
Can anyone remember these, and am l right in thinking that they were the first start of the turbo trainer development?

I had one like that, not sure of the make. After a few years, the roller seized and I gave it away to a passing cyclist (he called back later to collect it).

Replaced it with a "Rolloturbo". Very similar in usage, but was foldable and very good. Still have it for the occasions when I get desperate to get some exercise and don't have time to get out on the road.

It looks exactly like the one I had, but mine was white. I can't remember the make unfortunately but I must have bought it around 1987 / 88. The bottom bracket sat in a sort of cup and there was a clamping mechanism that held onto the chain stays just behind the BB. It always looked scary seeing how much the back end of the bike flexed behind this point!
Oh, and the noise, bl##dy hell the noise! Even jet engines are quieter now than that thing was.

That's right, it was a plastic coated T bar with a large plastic "wingnut" that secured the bike to the frame and also increased or decreased the amount of pressure the tyre had against the roller.
And yes, it was quite noise wasnt it.........
I'm convinced it was an early Tacx made trainer, but unfortunately Google hasn't revealed anything

I had one of those (coloured white) about 25 years ago. It only survived one season!

I did one very intense winter on my turbo trainer and had that indoor sweat problem, despite using a big fan to blow air over me. I always had to mop everything down afterwards, but what I neglected to do was to wipe the underside of the trainer. Enough salty sweat found its way down there to rust through the trainer by the time spring finally arrived...

So... make sure you wipe it ALL up!

According to the forum above, it was a Tacx trainer from the 80's?
