Help for Shoe Sizing for clipless pedals

Hi !
I plan to purchase spd pedals and mtb shoes for my bike. Since here in india the choices are very limited I have to order online.

I am very confused as to the actual size of the shoe, that I should buy, I will be buying Shimano or Northwave. The deals are quite good, but the sizing is very important.

I have measured my foot size and it is 10 inches in length.
My Fila sport shoes show the following sizes:

us uk eur
8 7 41
Could you please guide me as to what size should I go for Shimano and Northwave shoes.

I am aware that shoes, should always be tried on first and online is risky , since I would not be in a position to return them.

I read on some forums that in shimano you should go A size higher than the actual size, is this true, if yes by how much ?

Really appreciate if you'll could assist me, I am anxiously waiting to ride my Fuji Roubaix with spd's.

Common advice regarding Shimano shoes is to add one size to your shoe as they come up very small. My 42 needed a 43 and they were 'close' fitting.

I bought a pair of Shimano shoes and had to go 2 sizes bigger. Normally I'm a 39, I ordered a 40 but had to send them back and get a 41 because they were too small

I've always had to go up one size and have had Shimano and Sidi, and currently use Northwave boots and Lake shoes. All are +1 for size.

Thanks for replying ! Wow great responses. So can I go for a 42 since my shoe sizing is around 41.
Just another query, are the road shoes and mtb shoes similarly sized ie a 42 road would be the same size as a 42 mtb shoe, question sounds weird , sorry.

For the Specialized Body Geometry SPD ones that I have, I had to go up one size than my usual size.

I have 2 pairs of Specialized SPDs - one pair a 44, one a 43. They are quite wide, some of the other makes narrower, so it depends on your feet and best try on (or at least buy from an online retailer with a simple returns policy - I think Wiggle use Connect+ which is free)

I have taken the 42 and its good although, I did try a friends 43 and it was very much on the loose side. I am not able to wear thick socks and its a snug fit ! Is this alright, personally I feel my size is 42.5 but the availability online is remote.
