Help ... my son has just pulled on my brakes on my bike whilst I was fixing the p******** ... first thing I knew was when he said - the brakes don't do anything.... - I shouted "Don't" (too late of course), and he cried.

What do I need to do to fix this... is this when I get a screw-driver and try and push the bit back in?

Yes just push the pads back. If you can you're better off using a plastic tyre lever so that you don't damage the pads as you push them back.

Once all the way back, refit the wheel and pump the brake. (It wont work the first few times you pull the handle)

This bit is important.

Make sure you have a working brake before sailing off into the back of the nearest car....

Thanks ... the plastic things wouldn't go in but a knife would... to gently push back... 7 year old now knows that you don't pull on the brakes when the wheel is out... taken for a quick test ride and it seems ok. Thank you again.

Lesson 1.

Hang bike well out of the way when small children are around.

My youngster stumbled and fell against my bike and bent the rim.

I have a n00b disk brake question too.

Now I've part worn the pads on the front, the front brake lever doesn't return to it's starting position after the brakes have been applied. Is this a problem?

There's still some wear left on the pads and the brakes don't feel spongy at all.
