I am useless with animals watching from a distance is my thing. One of next doors chickens has escaped into my garden, a beautiful looking bird and is causing no trouble (yet). Next door is out, I have a viewing on the house in an hour and am wondering how to get the thing back, or will it had to the appeal? Obviously chicken sitting for the day now in case it escapes elsewhere so my plans to go shopping are doomed still at least I'll catch up on some work

Just grab it, wring it's neck, pluck it, gut it, in to the oven with a big fat onion up it's jacksy.. few roast potatoes (and my veg of the moment Butternut squash).

When you neighbour knocks and askes if you have seen thier chicken, say nope.. (whilst nonchantly chewing on a nice succulent chicken leg)

not here that's for sure, it's quite sweet watching it from the inside though it really needs to be down the other end of the garden in the less cultivated zone ie the football pitch!

You could try shoo'ing her ... to the other end ... send her to the veg patch and she will give it a good digging through.

trouble is the railway line is that end and I'm a bit worried she may jump the fence if I shoo her may be the estate agent would catch her, ha let's see if he can earn his money! I feel safe inside how ridiculous is that.

Incidently I don't have any biscuits in the house - perhaps marmite rice cakes wonder if she's a love it or hate it bird!

They'll eat anything, bread, rice cakes, bardboard, dogs, you name it

If you can lure it over, just pick it up. Hold it quite firmly because it will try and flap and reinstall it back over the fence.

We had a railway line at the end of the garden and none of our chickens ever went over the hedge/fence - why bother when there is good pickings where they are. They love worms!!!

do they like weeds? plucking up courage, perhaps if I lay a trail that goes over the fence it will go on it's own accord.

They prefer carefully planted seedlings.

Definitely... (well freshly dug soil - they always followed my Dad around the garden). If you really don't fancy getting near them .. you could try using a broom to try to persuade them to move a particular way.

If left unattended, the bird will destroy your lawn - as my garden proves. If you do manage to pick her up, hold firmly, across the wing and under your arm, and place your fingers around the leg. That way they can't struggle too much. My chickens eat most things, but bread and pasta are favourites.

I find it curious that so many people suggest I should kill my pet chickens. I point out that cat is a delicacy in some countries, but this seeems to be lost on them.

I hope your neighbour compensates you with an egg or two!

I have pasta cooking ready to prepare tonights meal, I think she knows where her friendy chickens are so a few shells in that direction may lead the way. I can't pick it up just hate flapping wings I would panic. job for the lads when home from school that'll sort them!

Throw a blanket over it. The weight of the blanket will keep it trapped but not be heavy enough to damage it. The bird will lie calmly in the dark until you can call in reinforcements.

If you're really bored, a bloke in Spain did once tell me that sex with chickens is good. Apparently you wait until you are on the gravy strokes then wring its neck and it will die shuddering. I believe he was serious; it was in a place called Huelva which is real "Deliverance" country.
