But if you must, get the one that fits you best and in a colour you like that has a Snell rating.

Oh and read this.

Tbh, Im edging towards a giro savant, or a spesh align for my next helmet. Which'll be in a few months. My current giro helmet has held up for 4.5 years! Its actually only the fact the colour doesn't match my cycling gear and bike that im going to get rid of it. Honestly, get a comfy one with a half decent rating!

The Align is a good reasonably priced helmet with an adjustment dial which gives a nice comfy fit.

yep, very comfy on the rare occasions it goes on my head. The drawback is the angled rear end that makes fitting a rear light at the right angle fiddly.

its a very mushroomy helmet tho, if aesthetics matter. (edit) mine is the max version xxl, its the only Spesh helmet that doesn't feel like a compression band around my head.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I have a spesh align and tbh its not my favourite , it feels overly padded to me and oversized so i hardly used it and prefer my battered giro for ventilation / fit but i have a warm bonce to start with.Had even considered floggin it at one point .

I'd suggest wondering into a shop with a decent range and trying a few on. The best helmet for you will be the one you feel most comfortable in, and may not be the one others find best, or one of the more expensive ones.

Half this forum is for helmets, the other half against. The last half doesnt Care either way as long as people dont start posts about helmets. Maths was never our strong point.

Steve
No indeed, your maths is very poor. You've missed out a half.

The fourth half doesn't care either way but quite enjoys reading helmet threads, in a ghoulish, car-crash watching kind of way.

Edit: For some reason the word "moiety" has popped into my head. There may be a fifth moiety that doesn't care either way about helmets or about helmet threads.

Nope..... halfthe forum is pro helmet, the other half is for informed choice with facts as opposed to anecdote and emotional blackmail.

The number of members against helmets is small.

The requirement for sale inthe UK is EN1078, but is virtually the protection you would get from a wet paper bag.
It is not accepted in the States, or by some UK event organisers

The other tests are tougher, using more realistic surfaces to drop the helmet against, and also at greater impacts

This suggests that they would offer greater protection

ANSI or Snell are the toughest. Snell being the benchmark

So.....

Fit
Research shows that a poorly fitting helmet can double the chance of head injury, so fit is the first thing you have to be happy with. Like shoes each company has a different shape, and you need to try on to make sure it fits

Comfort
Again needs trial. The helmet needs to fit your needs and be ventilated, but avoid sharp points that can catch in an accident , and may ejectthe helmet as well - google "Snag point"

Standard
Having got one that fits look at the standards that the helmet passes. These will be on the packaging.
Ignore EN1078, and as above look for ANSI or Snell certification

Compromise
The three are in order. Fit is vital as it will keep the helmet in place and let it work. Comfort as otherwise you will not wear it and then the highest standard helmet that allows the first 2
