One of my colleagues came off her bike recently and cut up her face quite badly. She didn't bang her head, but she's now bought a helmet. I don't blame her for that, but I wonder whether it would have made any difference to her injuries, which were mostly facial. The helmet does have a visor though. I wonder what happens to these when you faceplant the road. Does it snap, jerk your head back, or does it also add some protection?

I think unless the visor is framed and supported by something like a full face helmet, the visor could possibly get pushed into your face on faceplanting, which might save scuffing, but might also cut you if the angle is right or it breaks?Just a thought, but i wouldnt choose a visor on a normal cycling helmet.

And if it is a full face BMX helmet, then I think both her vision and hearing will be slightly affected by wearing the helmet. I wouldn't want to wear one of those on the road.

I'd have thought she'd have been worse off with a visor - ie it could have snapped forward and rammed into her face. Hope she's ok anyway.

Visors are generally only held on by a lug on either side which pops into a hole in the helmet. I guess that they'd snap off pretty easily in an accident. And they're pretty soft and flexible.

Unless you're down on the hoods, visors are great at keeping both the sun and the rain out of your eyes.

I didnt know about the safety release aspect,i suppose you would have to be very unlucky to suffer injury if they pop off easily on impact?

I've heard of people in accidents where these visors have snapped off completely and embedded themselves deeply into the victims brain.

Surely it could have shattered, blinding her permanently or causing ghastly facial scars?:becool:

Well, I don't know. I was just thinking out loud because I'd rather wear glasses than a visor. ;)

I heard of someone that a visor came off a motorcyclists helmet, and slit a peds throat and because of this the ped fell over and caused an artic to swerve into an oncoming bus which in turn had thirty people onboard, and all were seriously injured as the bus collided with the artic, tsk bloody visors eh?;)

Tsk bloody artics eh? :becool:

If the artic had jack knifed - it could have killed everyone waiting for the bus in one single thrust.

I was once cycling with someone who lost control of his bike and crashed coming down a very steep hill at speed. He landed on the front of his head and this forced the visor back into his eyebrow causing a cut that needed several stitches.

While I don't think there was ever any chance of it becoming embedded in his brain, I did immediately remove my own visor after this incident.

NB Despite the problem with the visor, the helmet did prevent him from sustaining a much more serious head injury.
