Helmet life

Without starting another "yes you need one/no you don't" thread, how long should one keep/wear a lid before binning? Motorsickle bonce potties always used to be 5 yrs max for polycarobonate and 8-10 for 'glass.
My Bell Triton's probably getting on for 2 years old, has never been in an accident (obviously, opr I'd have binned it straight away), but due to my above-average altitude has clonked the spars on the garage door as I put my bike away/get it out.
Any ideas?

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Saw a similar thread and one manufacturer came up with an 8 year life span after studies, a lot more than most of the competition said.

As long as it is washed ( heck i sometimes leave the whole lid in a bucket weighted down after scrubbing the straps to relive some of the pong ) i do not see why a lid should not last a fair while.

I've just had to pension off my 02 giro havoc - admittedly any material degradation might not be obvious, but it still seems fine, other than the rocloc fastenings breaking recently. I think sun/uv/temperature's the biggest helmet killer.

I'd stick with the motorcycle rule - 5 years.

Although I dropped my 6 month old giro on to concrete other day so it's being replaced slightly early!!
