I decided to take the ridgeback off the turbo and give it a quick run out as it was a cracking dry day. I had to take the home trainer tyre off and refit the original tyre, I managed to snap a tyre lever getting the tyre off, I re inflated the tyre and refitted the wheel to find it wouldn't keep pressure, so off with wheel then the tyre to find a hole in the inner tube. So I repaired that and stuck the tube and tyre back on the rim, pumped it up to the recommended 60 psi, I was just refitting the wheel when BANG! the tube exploded blowing the tyre right off the rim! After a quick check of the pants to make sure everything was all in order I decided to take the winter bike out for a quick spin. What could have caused that, a pinch in the tube?
I'm normally expecting the lidl's pump to explode not the tube.

Yes I think it's a sign of the tyre not seating right. I had the same thing with an old hack when we swapped the wheel and put the old tyre back on. We got the wheel back in and were having a cup of tea with the bike still in the kitchen when it blew. Not realising it was the whole rim/tyre match that was at fault, we tried again, and this time it got me all the way to campus, then blew while I was in the library - I came back to find it flat. I do wonder how many people thought they were being shot at when it went!

I had similar episode myself last year. Pumped my tyres up to recommended pressure, 100lbs, just before my ride, went back into house for about 5 minutes to get ready and get my computer and whilst resetting it heard a terrific bang outside.

When I got outside to see what had happened all neighbours were out looking round there gardens, I spent next 10 minutes checking mine and all windows etc for damage. When I could not find the source of the bang decided to carry on with my ride and it was then I found my front tyre blown completly of the rim and my inner tube in bits.

Never did find the cause but as I had no faith now in that wheel I bought a new one and it has never happened again. In a way I was lucky by leaving my computer in the house and having to get ready as without doubt I would have been riding when it happened. Only last week have I now plucked courage up to ride with my tyres pumped up to 100lbs again.

Install the inner tube slightly inflated.

When you finally roll the tyre onto the rim, go round the entire circumference of the tyre, pinching it with your fingers to check you CANNOT see the inner tube, because its INSIDE the tyre.
Inflate to about 10 psi, and then go round again checking the tyre is seated on the clincher correctly.

When all is OK, inflate to correct pressure.

Did all that today...the very last stage of rebuild of a very old single speed BSA.
Tyres seemed OK, one of the few things I thought I wasnt going to have to replace. No max pressure on the tyres side walls so I figure 60 psi should be about right.
ERROR ! Two loud bangs, split side walls and lovely star shaped holes in the (brand new) inner tubes.

Happened to me once at the end of a BUSA 25 TT Championships years ago. I'd just finished my ride (completely knanckered) and rested the bike against a mini-bus. As I turned round to chat to one of the guys a huge bang went off and my front tyre had burst with rather dramatic efect on the tyre - I had a spare inner tube but no spare 650c tyre - had to do a race the next day on a borrowed wheel.

I did that last year - I'd forgotten to push the valve up so that it wasn't caught under the tyre bead. Wrote off the brand new rim on the wheel that had just been built!
