Hello, please give me advice, I would like buy battery for electric bike. I found item with good price (48V 15-20Ah) on ebay but this is international shipment. Maybe someone bought directly something from China?
I dont know how much is extra charge (tax)?

The first thing you need to be aware of is that due to the explosive nature of batteries and the concerns over aircraft terrorism they are considered to be a restricted commodity. This change to the law came in January 1st 2013

HK Post, China Post, DHL and others will no longer ship batteries from the far east to Europe, you need a specialist licenced shipping agent. You can see some of the issues being experienced at the following URL
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?371039-Batteries-not-being-mailed-from-china

UPS is a licensed agent for world wide shipping of batteries and have a lot of information on the matter. Contact UPS for shipping costs but don't expect it to be cheap.
http://www.ups.com/content/gb/en/resources/ship/packaging/guidelines/batteries.html

If you attempt to get around this and customs intercept the shipment, you will without doubt get an exceptionally BIG fine.

I used to get li-ion batteries from overseas for Shimano Di2 seat post battery conversions but the increases in cost and the hoops you need to jump through has made it not cost effective to the point where I have pretty much stopped doing Di2 conversions for other people.

So, what are the rules about travelling with phones, tablets, laptops or any other consumer electronic devices containing Li-ion batteries?

No idea at all.... I think the concern surrounds other unknown cargo. I believe that a investigate TV show was able to get batteries, alcohol and toxic weed killer on the same flight, basic ingredients for something nasty.
An over reation followed and not one which makes much sense. It is easier to ship torches fitted with batteries than the batteries for the torches.

Check with your airline or shipping agent.

I'm not flying anywhere in the near future, but at some point I hope to and will be taking my gadgets with me! Will check at the time ...

I fly a fair amount, never had an issue with digital camera, iPhone, blackberry, laptop, tablet. I keep all in my hand luggage. They scan laptops and tablets out of the bag. Rest stays in the bag.

You cannot put electric bike batteries on an aeroplane. We were going to take our electric bikes to France but found out very quickly that the bikes could go on but the batteries would have to be sent by road.

They could make for a useful backup for when the battery on the Dreamliner goes up in smoke.

Hello krystian91.

Have you looked on the forum of http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/ which is a forum dedicated to all things for electric bikes? Several of the people on that forum have converted ordinary bikes to electric bikes using kits bought off ebay or other sources. Some of them must have come up against the same problem as you have, over getting batteries imported.

I hope you are able to find an answer to your enquiry.

Air freighting ebike batteries from China as a component has become a problem.

I believe it's still possible to ship a battery in a ship, but not worth it for a single item and it takes too long.

A couple of companies now hold some stock in Europe, and they still seem able to send to UK one way or another.

Air freighting an ebike complete with a battery appears less of a problem.

My Rose ebike was sent airfreight from Rose in Germany.

I looked into building one a long while back.
For LifeP04, the slightly heavier but more everlasting type of Lithium battery I think it was this major EU supplier who had all the costs covered, including VAT

http://www.ev-power.eu/

And now it seems there is now a newer type, LifeYPO4.
Anyone know the difference?
