Hello to everyone, I've been skim reading through cyclechat for a while now and it seems like a great community, so I thought I'd get involved as the cycling bug bites harder!

A bit about me.

I'm a 25 year old currently living in Durham, but originally from West Yorkshire. I've been cycle "commuting" to my office for about 3 years now, originally on a mountain bike that I stuck semi-slicks on, but for the past couple of years I've been on a Carrera road bike. It's on about 2.5 miles each way, but on the way back there's a nice 4% hill for about 0.7km that still makes the legs scream.

At the start of the year my interest in cycling shot up and I decided to start on my journey to becoming a "roadie", even picked up a turbo trainer for our lovely North Eastern winter, but work got in the way (or so was my excuse for being lazy). Here in Durham it seems you can't get about 2 miles away from my place without hitting a 4% or greater hill, and that was wrecking my morale. So I've decided to hit the trainer hard and build up my cardio fitness and legs a bit so I can conquer them and ultimately go on to longer road rides.

For the past couple of weeks I've been doing 7(ish) miles on the trainer 3/4 times a week while watching TV, and I've just picked up a couple of Sufferfest videos (I did Angels the first time yesterday - ouch). Hoping to actually start getting some road miles in now my confidence has gone back up, just don't like walking my bike up hills and feeling deflated!

Now I just need to stop browsing online cycle stores / ebay constantly until I have some money....

Anyway, that's me, hello!!

:hello:

You sure have some hills in Durham, they will get a bit more managable every time you ride them.

Enjoy it and keep us posted on how its going

Hello and welcome. Durham's absolutely beautiful and with your fitness improving it's gonna be great cycling round there in Summer. If we have a Summer this year!

I lived in Durham for 20 years, lovely place and yes, your never far from a hill. Those hills may be your enemy right now but they will become your barometer for progress. You might even enjoy going up them one day!

Get strava or endomondo or such on a smartphone to record your journeys and post the rides in the beginners thread, or use a cycle computer if u get one. Helps with monitoring mileage and speed etc. serves as a nice morale booster.

Send my best to Newton Hall and Framwellgate Moor!

Yeah I did a couple of 8 mile rides last summer before the exercise went almost completely! They were usually laps around the outskirts of the city to avoid the huge hills, but I'm back with a better motivation to get up those hills and see some of the amazing countryside around here.

I'm sure I will enjoy it one day! I do have strava and I've been using it to track my turbo workouts, but I'm planning on moving my weekend turbo sessions out to the road so I'll get posting in that thread as well.

I live just up on Crossgate Moor so only around the corner from Framwellgate!

Oh nice, I live just off the 167 over the wall from Durham Johnston, so I've got my eye on Redhills..... Eventually!!

Used to cycle from Nevilles Cross to the bottom of Newton Hall every day to see my girlfriend. Course when your 15 years old hills don't mean anything to you, still would never have cycled up Redhills, must be 18%!
