Helicopter Tape

Okay, I have a small chip which needs to be covered with something to stop the rust - it's fairly small - around 1mm diameter but is quite deep, as in through the paint. It's an aluminium frame and my question regards whether or not I can use this tape retrospectively over the chip to stop it from rusting? I'm not bothered about filling it in, I know I'll make a pig's ear of it and don't mind the visual side of it, but don't want any corrosion, obviously.

Is this the wrong idea or will it protect the chip from any rust once covered?

Thanks.

Does aluminium corrode? I thought it formed a layer of aluminium oxide on the surface (OK, so this bit IS corrosion), but the oxide layer then protects the rest of the metal...

I understand this to be the case particularly for the world of bicycle. If you chucked it into the sea or strong caustic/acid then the case might be different, but other than cometics, don't worry. Steel bikes which do rust still last for donkeys years.

Marvellous, cosmetics bother me not but she's a new beast and like the roadie bike, she needs to be looked after.

Thanks all.

I don't want to rub salt in your wounds, Monsieur Remings, but road de-icing chemicals, including salt, sound like slightly bad news for aluminium. If you ride on the roads when they are likely to be used, I suppose there might be a small risk. My road bike is aluminium framed and has a few nicks and scratches. It doesn't worry me at all. Here's an article anyway...

And also makes those steel frames lighter over time! "And there was me thinking I was getting faster"
