This might be old as the hills but I have a fun way of getting up a hill with my pal:

We both have Mio Alpha watches with a Heart Rate Zone set to 110bpm, and we log our climbs.
The goal is to get up the (fairly trivial) hill without going above 110bpm at all costs. It can make for some pretty aggressive pushing of a bicycle.

Problem is, it seems like the outcome is invariably the same. We both have different heart behaviours it seems. I tend to have a lower resting, but it seems to ramp up quite quickly. Friendo has a higher resting, but never seems to get the highs I do on any run we have done.

So my question is, is there any way to come up with an adjusted 110bpm for each rider, to level the playing field.

Essentially, how can I make this fair/cheat/win?

People have varying heart rates, regardless of fitness.

Use the Karvonnen method to determine your respective heart rate zones, then use the number that is bottom of zone 1 for each of you.

Ah well, that looks good, but it doesn't help me win. I guess maybe spds will give me an advantage when pushing...

Basically, admit defeat?

Essentially, I need a formula, with a name that sounds authoritative, that gives me an extra 10bpm. Never mind.

It does if your target should be lower.

Or. Do the same thing, but lie about your zone 1.

Or, let's say your opponent is not as fat as you, get him to carry a backpack weighing the difference. He'll collapse.

That's it! Weight. I either lose weight, get him fat, or as you say weight his bike up "voluntarily". Why didn't I think of that?!I can sweeten the deal by using actual science on the heart rate!
