headset help

My mate and I bought a new headset for his new fork. We got the right size and everything but when it came to fitting it I failed!

Problem 1. Couldnt get crown race down below 5mm from crown. If DIYing it whats the best method?

Problem 2. Each bearing has 4 parts. We propose to remove the outer ring as the bikes headtube already has them fixed to it I think. But the supplied outers have a lip round the inside for the pink seal ring to clip under. The built in ones in the frame don't. Is it okay to disregard the pink seals?

Problem 3. How do you fit a starnut without special tools?

There's a few star it videos on YouTube but I can't help with the rest, basically just use the back of a screwdriver that fits down the fork and tap it down with a hammer
