I have been having these symptoms for the last week or so whilst cycling or doing any moderate exercise. I don't know if I am coming down with something or what but it is making cycling a less enjoyable experience overall.

I have had asthma since I was young but I haven't had much problems cycling since I lost the weight last year when commuting by bike, I used to do a 5 mile each way trip 4 or 5 days a week with not much problem and without use of a ventolin inhaler. Still sweaty and knackered at the end but not completely exhausted. It could be that I no longer commute on a regular basis and have let myself become unfit over the Christmas period without gaining any weight, just a little beer gut (still around 80kg according to the scales).

It is only recently when I have been doing trips to town, around 1-1.5 miles, that I had problems with chest pains and pains in my jaw/back of the throat accompanied soon after by a persistent headache.

I have booked an appointment with the asthma clinic at the doctors for the 25th just to be sure.

Sounds sensible to get checked out at the docs

Sounds like a virus Tom - mine always start with a sore throat and then work their way down to the chest and give flu like symptons only not as bad as the real thing.

I wouldn't bother with the Asthma clinic as they wont be able to help - see the Doc and also ask if there are any better products than Ventolin for your case. Stuff like Seretide gives you 12 hours protection and I think is being targeted at asthma cases these days.

I've ridden through these things in the past but it's not really worth it as you can pick up a chest cold/bacterial infection which makes matters worse.

Thank you for your advice so far, much appreciated

I would like to clarify that the chest and throat/jaw pains are at their worst when breathing in, but they are present at all times after a few minutes of moderate riding. There is one hill on Underwood Lane and one gentle incline on West Street which are on my route into town, and it is when I get to the top of the hill is when the problems usually start.

Route

How far I get from home pain free

I will book an appointment to see the doctor sometime tomorrow morning. I will keep to my asthma clinic appointment as it has been a year since my last visit and there is no harm in going for a progress check.

TBH that sounds as though you have just strained the muscles by being too tense under exertion - they are all connected. But the Doc will know a lot better than me.

As above, doesn't sound like asthma to me.

Although not a doctor, I do here about a lot of client's injuries / problems and never heard of the combination of both chest and jaw hurting before. Usually one or the other.

You've done the right thing though with getting a GP appointment.

Chest/throat/jaw pain on exertion always needs to be checked out. 99% of the time it is innocent but the other 1% makes it worth the trouble.

I think you have a serious case of man flu. Play on it, you might even get breakfast in bed!

Well thanks to surgery working hours I won't be able to call in and make an appointment until Monday

As far as I know I do not have or ever had high blood pressure, not that I have every checked anyway, maybe that is something that I should be asking about when I go and see my GP. I know that they have self testing machines in the lobby for people who are waiting for an appointment to use.

Like I say though I will get it checked out ASAP, but should I continue cycling in the meantime? It could be up to or over a week before they may be able to fit me in and I need to take regular trips to town for supplies
