Hi All

I am stripping down a old steel framed raleigh pioneer elite, on the top and bottom of the head stock there is chrome inserts which the bearings sit in(sorry if thats not the jargon) my question is do they come out.

As i am getting it shot blasted would a mask up be the best bet.

Yeah, they'll tap out. Knock around the edge with a soft hammer (copper, ally) or use something soft with an ordinary hammer. If you're not re-using them just use a hammer.

A screwdriver down inside the tube is the easiest way, just tap it evenly (to prevent deforming the ID of the tube) round the edge of the cup with the said hammer. Best to replace with new cups.

If you struggle, the shotblasters/powdercoaters can mask it off for you.
I struggled to get mine off...in fact i gave up, but TBF didnt know the correct way and also didnt want to risk shattering or cracking the cups (more expense on an already expensive project).

I have got a little overspray onto the chrome of mine, but it always was going to be a winter commuter
