Hello.

I have bought a road bike with an unusual head set, that needs replacing.
I do not know the original head set maker.
The size is top bearing...7Hx41.8 (out side dia)by8x30.2(inside dia)x 45 degree taper on the bearing body.
The other bearing that fits in the frame bottom is 8Hx52 (o.d)8x40 (i.d) again with taper of 45 degree.
The 7h and 8h must refer to the thickness of each bearing.
I have tried on line and at bike shops and bearing suppliers, with no luck.
The bike is a modern carbon frame road bike.
Please can any one help ?
I shall be so grateful.

Thank you
Doug.

I am told that the head set is some times referred to in imperial measures as 1 and 1/8 inch by 1 and a half inch.

What you have been told is certainly true. The internal headtube dimensions tend to dictate the (1 and 1/8) or (1 and 1/2) and therefore dictate what headsets will fit (ie. diameter of the fork top).

Your mention of bearings makes me ask if are you just servicing your existing headset and want replacement bearings, rather than needing a complete headset?

Perhaps the make\model of bike or even of the existing headset may be more helpful in locating a replacement or parts?

Hello.

Yes all I need is replacement bearings, but I am unable to get them.
Have tried various bearing suppliers, all without success.
Also searched via Google.
Thank you for the reply

The make and modle I do not know as the bike was built from quality new pieces from different sources.
Has carbon frame, forks and various other carbon parts.

Hi Doug
If its a modern carbon frame/forks then most likely it will be fitted with an integrated 1 1/8th headset which does not have ''roller'' bearings. Suggest you take the headset apart and post a picture.

If you actualy told us what brand the frame is and if it was made in the last ten years then it would take all of 30 seconds to name which intergrated headset the frame was built around.

Why leave out that info?

I wish I knew the frame maker, that would help me a lot.
The cycle was constructed from parts bought from various shops.
It was built about 1 year ago.
I am informed that as it's carbon fibre the frame and forks where probably made in China.
I bought it from a chap that I am no longer in contact with.
I believe the head set bearings are knackered because the bike was left out side in a leaking shed.
The frame has been "custom" painted, possibly the supplier name or shops name being removed in the painting process.
Thanks
Doug.

With the best will in the world Doug, i dont think you're going to get the information you need without taking it to a bikeshop. There's just not enough information to go on. A bike shop will probably identify it quite quickly.
Good luck anyway...

I agree with taking to a bike shop as they should be able to identify it immediately, but if you posted a picture of the H/S that would certainly help

Thank you for the reply.

That is the problem, I have been to a (in fact two) bike shop and they do not have a suitable replacement.

I really would be delighted if I could buy a replacement locally.

Regards

Doug.

Even if the shop doesnt have a suitable replacement they should be able to either

A) Identify the type you need and order one in for you.
B) Identify the type you need and tell you what to go order online.

We cant help here without bike models or pictures.

It's very simple -

If you want a new 1 1/8" by 1 1/4" headset order one of these: [ http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=39380 ] or something similar - there are plenty about - from a half decent bike shop.

If you want only new balls for the bearings remove some examples, count how many you need and proceed to a half decent bike shop.

I'm surprised your local shops were unable to give you this info but there you go. Maybe you are asking the wrong questions.

And, with all due respect, your frame sounds as dodgy as f. No transfers on the frame itself? No make on the headset? 'Custom paintjob'? You have no idea what it is and cannot communicate with the seller? You seem reluctant to post images of it too.

Very few folk paint carbon frames. Happy to be proved wrong but as far as I know only Argos in Bristol are authorised by most mainstream frame manufacturers to paint carbon frames. And who would 'custom paint' a carbon frame and then sell it? It must be a fairly new frame going by the headset size. And why would you paint a carbon frame? Damage? Damage. What's under that paint old chap?

Ding a ling a ling alarm bells.

Mickle has said what I was holding back from.

This all sounds a bit vague and evasive for my tastes, if you wan't to know the headset type post a picture of the frame...unless there is some reason why you don't want it to be seen on a cycling forum.
