My nose has started streaming today so the start date for my hayfever season is 21st April.

I blame the fields of oil seed rape. When ever I pass a bright yellow field I can feel the pollen attacking me!!!

Got up yesterday and could tell spring was here.

First day I’ve used an anti histamine this year.

I don’t use branded ones though.

Costs too much dough

Just checked the packet lid

got a generic from morissons.

Think it was two packets for a quid...

Pedantically, it's not "hay" fever as the grass isn't producing pollen yet. If you get it this early, it's almost certainly (hawthorn, cherry, plum etc) tree pollen that is causing your woes.

Unpedantically, and emboldened for emphasis, you can not get "hay (or tree) fever" from oilseed rape. Rape is not an air-borne pollinator, there is no rape pollen in the air to affect you, although the bees think it's lovely.

It is possible (although I don't think it has been proven) that the VOC's released by flowering rape could increase sufferers' sensitivity to the tree pollens which are around at this time of year, but rape itself cannot cause hay fever.

BTW, you might be able to use the above to spot the farm boi who gets hay (from grass) fever every year.

Mine started very early this year and seems more aggressive than usual. It's affecting my eyes quite a bit which hasn't happened since I was a child. I find two antihistamines - one in the morning, one at night - tends to sort me out (and I can breathe easier at night).

I can forgive a pedant. Thanks Norm I feel I have learnt something today.

My tree pollen fever is usually gone by June so I guess I am not a hayfever sufferer at all.

My oilseed rape issues must be psyco-sematic

Now all you need to do is persuade others that you have tree fever rather than hay fever.

Mrs Norm gets it from trees, Small I also seems to be an early sufferer, mine is definitely grass.

It could be psychosomatic, it could be that the "oil" released when oilseed rape is in flower does have an effect.

It could also be just that rape gets its bad rep because of the timing. Rape crops have taken over much of the mechanised landscape, it does smell quite strongly when in flower (I find it pleasant but Mrs Norm gags on it) and it is very visible at the same time of year that tree pollen is at it's height. Maybe oilseed rape just needs to get a new marketing agent.

Strange I usually notice the rape, but as a warning. Because its disappearance is when I tend to start. Noticed sore eyes on Thursday....

I wonder whether different pollens give me different symptoms - I get early eye itching problems (tree pollen used to be really bad in Switzerland late Feb/early Mar) and quite a bit of associated sneezing but later, as more flowers come into bloom, I get really wheezy when exerting myself and sinuses become a problem.

I use a three prong approach - eye drops, daily tablet and Beconase nose spray when the nose/breathing gets bad. Seems to work reasonably well but I notice how much better my breathing is at the end of the summer.

If you want a herbal option you can try taking tablets Ester C tablets.

I will take 1 tablet a day all year round and since taking them I very rarely get a cold. From the start of May until the end of July I take 2 tablets a day and so far since I have been taking Ester C my hay fever symptoms have been reduced

I'm with Norm on this one Tree pollen: didn’t think other cyclists suffered with it.
Very year starting April, I just get a slight nose irritation.
The worst thing is; it takes away all my energy; Absolutely Knackered .
Some days it's all I can do to walk, never mind cycle.
I find that if I go and camp on a beach; I'm fine in three Days.
By mid May I’m OK again, and come August I'm fine in a field full of grass pollen.
PS don’t forget that in mid August with Heather in flower: It's a low growing Willow.

So my symptoms temporary return! Zoof
