Hi,

I'm looking for a hardtail for my son. He's 5ft 9 so a medium/large frame. Although the majority of his riding is to school and back - road/paths, he's showing an interest in coming along with me for a ride, so I want something he can start doing longer rides (I'm never sure how to describe my riding, but I guess its like gravel stuff. I do go up and around the likes of Box Hill and that area off road. Usually 20+ miles.). Obviously I'd love him to have some fab bike, but firstly he may not enjoy tagging along with me so be silly to spend too much, and secondly his last bike was stolen.

I'm looking through eBay at the moment and I can't make my mind up if its awash with stolen bikes or its just people with low feedback and who can't be bothered to put any effort into their auctions! There have been a couple of great looking deals but slightly over what I'd really like to pay.

Got my eye on Gumtree and FB marketplace as well but thought I'd ask here as well.

Thanks

You might want to add your location unless you’re prepared to travel far and wide to collect

FB is awash with scammers and stolen bikes so be very careful. EBay is far more reliable but you may have to travel to collect the ideal bike.

£300 should bag a decent hardtail bike.

Vantage

Carbon fibre... LMAO!!!
Can I suggest looking in decathlon? Last July I bought a Rock Rider ST540 for £400. I've cycled all my life and owned bikes worth north of £2000 but that 540 is one of the nicest handling bikes I've had. The components are pretty good and the forks never gave me one once of trouble despite being hammered regularly. You get decent hydraulic brakes too.
It's showing as out of stock at the moment online but if you go into one of their stores it might be a different story. They're down to about £350 at the mo.

This will be famous last words, but I think I'll be savvy enough to spot the bad eggs.

Great - I'll have a look. Thanks

I'd ask your local club if anyone is selling one. Often people have bikes in their garage they want to move on but just havent got round to advertising etc. Plus you will know they are not a scammer etc hopefully.
I would'nt buy another bike from Decathlon, I had a lot of trouble with one from there. Obviously though everyone's experience is different.

I live in Surrey/London bit but I’d have no clue where North Surrey is 🤪
