Last week a mates bike went a bit wrong - the hanger failed, knackering the cassette and derailleur in the process.

Sorting a new derailleur and cassette isnt a problem but as I understand it, not all hangers are created equal. I've given him one off my old bike (Bianchi Via Nirone) but I'm not sure it will be compatible with his Carrera TdF?

Almost certainly not compatible. There are an infinite number of different hangars to suit different sized/shaped aeroplanes.

The supplier (Halfords) should be able to supply one if provided with model and year.

Your LBS will likely have a box of different hangars, one of which might fit (vital to take the old one down), and otherwise have a reference manual (or even a wall chart) which will/should identify the part needed (+1 to what 'more cleverer' Mickle said - seemingly infinite designs even from same stable) and be able to get it in. You'd think Halfords as the supplier would be more likely to have one - but let us know how they do!? I'd try the LBS as well.

Halfords are useless on this score - they will just refer to the website you can look on for yourself. They don;t even stock hangers for the bikes they sell...

I got a spare one in Halfords not long ago. Fitted my old Ribble nicely with a little filing.
