I was just looking at the website for a sportive I vaguely was thinking of doing next month (the Ullapool one) and came across this:

Event Regulations
No bicycle, tandem or other machine, conventional or otherwise, is permitted to have unconventional handlebars including triathlon bars, aero bars, clip-ons, prayer bars, and cow bars. Neither are Spinachi type bars permitted. However, ATB bar ends are permitted on mountain bikes

Now, I appreciate I have Triathalon bars on my bike, but what are the other types they mention??

I'll look them up, but I am still curious to know what they all are for.

Thanks.

Aero bars= tri bars
Clip-on being clip on tri bars.
Cow bars, I assume, means bullhorn bars.
Spinaci is another type of bar here: http://www.cinelli.it/EN/spinaci/storia/
can be had as a clip-on: http://www.roadbikereview.com/mfr/cinelli/handlebars/PRD_28683_2498crx.aspx

It is generally acknowledged that TT bars are less than ideal for cycling in a group. The organisers have listed a range of TT type bars that they do not want in order to ensure that riders have the best control of their bikes. The cow bar one seems to me, to be the odd one out. But, possibly thay had a rider turn up with cow bars on a previous event.
