Anyway I was looking at putting some new gel/cork handlebar tape on and thought it seemed quite pricey, £7 for the cheapest stuff that looks ok , while researching how to put the tape on, I came across this little gem on Youtube

Recycled bicycle tube handle bar wrap

Thought I would give it a try, then double wrap with some much cheaper thin ribbon to make it look nice - just wondered if anyone had tried this and if there is a downside ?

Ifs been very many years since I brought handlebar tape, I use electrical tape, the cheap stuff you by in the local market, it works a treat.

The guy in the video wraps it the wrong way, should start from the bar end and work towards the stem.

Yes, I have tried it, and you get the same results from handlebar tape without the hassle. Better to show them how it is done correctly. Do not want to mislead todays' youth with incorrect bar wrapping procedure and unsound materials and methods. I am siding with Montage on the haircut, as with the rest.

Haircut - watch it to the end. It's a syrup.

Re the direction of wrapping, whether it slips or not, it's the wrong way. Starting at the stem means the layers are, umm, layered so they'll tend ruffle up through use.
