More of a series of 'bangs' really, while heaving on the bars, until it beds in after a mile or so.

I put a smear of copper grease on the bar clamp area of the stem and it's still doing it, so I need to put some on the steerer-stem clamp.

Am I OK to use copper grease on a carbon steerer? Ta

I can't answer your question, but just in case it helps you (or somebody else) ... I had similar noises on my mountain bike once!!

Remove clamp bolts and clean them then grease and torque back up. Don't use copper slip on carbon - use carbon paste instead

The compression washer can cause this. If you have an alloy steerer over time the washer blackened the steerer. Just wire wool this off the steerer and washer and reassemble.
