I've recently got a handlebar camera mount to make it easier to take shots during audax events

I have some comments/pictures etc on the 7 day shop camera mounting clamp device on my blog here

Overall verdict from me is that it's a great way to use a camera on a bike, much less faff than having it in a pocket and making hand held shots

Personally I never give them ball joints much chance of surviving...

Interesting!

I too have reservations about the durability of it though; the possibility of my camera falling off when I hit a bump in the road at high speed. Also - the possibility of vibration damaging the camera.

I have a small camera bag attached to my stem but that still requires me to stop to take the camera out and I don't like taking pictures when riding one-handed. Potsy has been doing that on some of our recent forum rides but I'm sure I'd end up either crashing or dropping the camera if I tried it.
A bar mount could result in me taking more pictures on my rides, which is something I'd like to do.

If I bought one, I'd definitely tie the camera's lanyard to the bars, just-in-case!

The camera's strap is tied to the hoop on the back of the mount

The camera is a water proof/shock proof one

I'm not expecting the mount to last forever but it isn't carrying much weight and I'm only using it for a few events

I just have memories of a light flying off my bike and shattering on a descent that we will be doing on my Forest of Bowland ride on May 15th! If I buy a mount, I'll make sure that I tie the camera on securely.

I wouldn't have the cables-in-view problem because I have Campagnolo groupsets on my bikes which of course route cables under the bar tape. I reckon with a more central mount position (and possibly more forward too?) my hoods might not be visible. I could certainly crop them out of pictures.

The only other problem is finding space on the bars. I already have a GPS, horn and front light on there at the moment but I suppose I shouldn't need the light until the autumn now.

I could try mounting my Kodak Zi8 pocket camcorder that way, but I don't think videos shot while the bike was moving would be very usable because the image stabilisation isn't great. The mount would make a good replacement tripod though when the bike was stationary!
